The Daily Run...

I got to put on a pair of new running shoes today.  What a great feeling!   The first run in a new pair of shoes is always great.  With my feet feeling like they were floating on air, my first thoughts of the run were about that running shoe commercial…I think it’s New Balance.  In the commercial, getting out of bed and the first mile of the run are really hard, but wearing New Balance shoes tips the balance of the love-hate relationship that we have with running to the love side.

I ran today with the dogs for the first time in a week.  I’ve had a very bad cold and haven’t been able to get out.  It was great to be able to move again.  I probably pushed it a little too much and started running too early…I’m still stuffed up and sniffling.  I had a headache and a sore throat this morning, but I couldn’t stand sitting still any longer!  I had to get up and move.  What’s more, the dogs were really restless.  The weather is cool and they just wanted to GO.

This morning was a glorious day to run!  It has finally gotten cool here in North Florida.  The temperature was only about 55, the sky was clear, and the humidity was low.  We didn’t have to get up at 5am to beat the sun and the heat.

This is the kind of day that both the dogs and I love.  Perfect running weather! It was a magnificent run…for one mile.  Then, it got very frustrating.  It seems that great weather is the time everyone decides that his or her dog needs to go without a leash.

The dogs and I run pretty much every weekday during most weeks.  You’d be surprised at how many people are up early walking or running.  We always run into other people and other dogs (not to mention the wildlife you run across at dawn!).  I’ve always thought that you could write a book about the events of early morning runs!

I run every morning with my two dogs, Rose and Phoebe. I’ve been doing this since Rose was young – about 5 years now!  I can’t believe that she’s eight-and-a-half.  Phoebe is just a youngster and has just started joining us.  She’s a year and a half old.  These runs are a great way to start the day –they get your mind and body going at the same time.  I use them sometimes to organize the day, but mostly, my mind just wanders and since the dogs are with me, it usually seems to wander along dog related tracks (surprise, surprise).
